The Myeongdong Underground – Navigating through the Mall tunnels

Even though it’s winter now, we still manage to get a lot of tourists in during this time. The snow is quite magical and Korea has some of the best ski resorts all throughout Asia. On the other hand, it can get wickedly cold here and you have to know how to get around quickly and efficiently around here. Most tourists will spend time in the area mapped below. When staying there, its good to get acquainted with the underground tunnels in the Myeongdong district. It’s there you can take refuge from the cold as well as continue your shopping and get to where you need to go.

You can essentially walk from City Hall Station all the way to the DDP at Dongdaemun Culture and History Park without ever taking a step outside. Along the way there are shops and snack stops along the way. A lot of companies have side entrances from these tunnels.

Tunnels of Myeongdong
Tunnels of Myeongdong – You can even walk to Myeongdong and Noon Square through the Joseon Westin Hotel, Lotte Department Stores from City Hall Station. Use the Sogong Underground Shopping Center Tunnel

Start at City Hall Station but don’t surface. Just before exit 6 and 7 you will find the entrance to CitiStar Mall. This is a mall that arcs around the Presidential Hotel and the Lotte Hotel. This is also the strip that will lead you to Euljiro 1-ga Station without ever going outside. Make sure you don’t miss the piano stairs and play a tune before arriving at the station.

You’ll find that you will go up and down minimal stairs throughout this walk, but you will never need to go outside. Looking at the map I drew above, you can now walk straight another 2.4km through Primall to get to Dongdaemun Design Plaza or DDP at Dongdaemun Culture and History Park Station.

Another option is to take the escalator to Lotte Department Store right before exit 7 and 8. It’s through the basement 1 level of the Lotte Department Store that you can connect to Myeongdong. There’s a great food court and grocery store to get plenty of samples or a snack. And Korea’s first Panda Express.

Navigate through that to get to Avenuel, the luxury shopping line of Lotte. There you can lay eyes on a $10 million diamond ring on display at Cartier absolutely free.

You can further make your way to Lotte Young Plaza, but more importantly, you are at a point where the tunnels will connect with Myeongdong’s Noon Square or back to the Sogong Underground Shopping Mall to take you back to City Hall Station.
